How to Select a Gripper Chain for Bottle and Package Handling

A practical selection sequence for matching pitch, grip style, conveyor geometry, sprockets and material to the product being conveyed.

1. Identify the product and grip contact

Record the product material, diameter or width, mass, stiffness and the surface that the insert will touch. A rigid bottle may suit a broad D-style contact pad, while a light or flexible round product may need a different finger or grip profile.

2. Measure the installed chain interface

Capture pitch, top width, base-chain width, roller or guide dimensions and any side-flex geometry. If replacing an installed system, count sprocket teeth and record the sprocket bore and hub as well.

3. Map the conveyor path

Mark straight sections, radius sections, incline, decline, vertical travel and any inversion. Gripper systems often use two opposing chains, so also record the adjustment range between them and how tensioning is arranged.

4. Add the operating duty

Line speed, starts per hour, shock, cleaning chemicals, product contamination limits, temperature and lubrication restrictions all affect the final materials and construction.

5. Freeze the replacement through drawing or sample

Market family codes are useful identifiers, but they are not a substitute for the dimensions that control fit. For a nonstandard or legacy chain, use a dimensioned drawing or approved sample before production.
