Inspect elongation and articulation
Measure chain elongation over a defined number of pitches and compare it with the maintenance limit set for the machine. Look for stiff joints, seized articulation and uneven pitch growth rather than judging wear only by appearance.
Inspect rollers, bushes and pins
Check roller rotation, side clearance, pin security and visible fretting. Attachment chains also need inspection around welded, bent or bolted attachment interfaces where cyclic loads can concentrate.
Inspect sprockets with the chain
Hooked or thinned teeth can accelerate wear on a new chain. Confirm alignment, tooth condition and shaft security before fitting a replacement chain.
Control lubrication and contamination
Use the machine and chain manufacturer’s lubrication method for the actual environment. In washdown or cleanliness-sensitive systems, specify the lubrication restriction at RFQ stage rather than treating it as a later maintenance change.
Plan replacement from evidence
Keep the last chain code, measured pitch, strand count, attachment spacing and sprocket data in the maintenance record. That evidence shortens the next replacement cycle and reduces the risk of visually similar but incompatible substitutes.
